Mamelodi Sundowns and Zamalek dropped points in Sunday’s CAF inter-club group stage matchday five action and they will be under pressure ahead of their final matches.
Sundowns had to fight back to hold FC Saint-Eloi Lupopo to a 1-1 draw as Jayden Adams cancelled out Henoc Molia’s goal in DR Congo. The result left the South African giants placed third in the Champions League Group C standings – two points behind leaders, MC Alger, with the two teams set to meet in Pretoria next weekend.
Meanwhile, Pyramids’ defence of the Champions League title is on track after they progressed to the quarter-finals following their emphatic 4-1 win over Rivers United in Nigeria, with Mostafa Fathi, Marwan Hamdy, Odeh Al-Fakhouri and Nasser Maher all scoring for the Egyptian side in a Group A clash.
Stade Malien joined Pyramids in the last eight after claiming an impressive 1-0 victory over Tunisian football powerhouse, Esperance Sportive de Tunis, courtesy of Daouda Coulibaly’s second-half goal and they are five points clear at the top of Group D standings with a game to spare.
In the Confederation Cup, Zamalek’s hopes of reaching the knockout phase took a knock after they suffered a shocking 1-0 loss to ZESCO United in Zambia. Therefore, the Egyptian giants are now placed second in Group D standings, two points behind leaders Kaizer Chiefs, with the two sides scheduled to clash next weekend in Cairo.
Meanwhile, CR Belouizdad secured their place in the quarter-finals after overcoming Singida Big Stars 1-0 in Tanzania thanks to Abdennour Iheb Belhocini’s third-minute goal and the Algerian side are three points clear at the top of the Group C standings.
In Group B, Wydad AC are on the brink of progressing to the next round after edging Nairobi United 1-0 in Kenya, which elevated them to the top of the standings and USM Alger will finish at the top of Group A after overcoming San Pedro 3-2 in the Ivory Coast.
