The battle for ranking points and a coveted place in the final of the 12th edition of the Kwibuka Women’s T20 Tournament continued to gather momentum as teams returned to action following a scheduled rest day on June 16.
With the tournament being played in a double-round-robin format before progressing to the final on Friday, every match now carries significant weight. As the competition entered its final stretch, hosts Rwanda remained firmly in control of the standings, while Zimbabwe HPC, Nigeria and Brazil continued their pursuit of qualification.
Rwanda on Top Before the Break
At the close of play on June 15, Rwanda sat at the summit of the standings after an impressive start to the tournament.
The hosts had accumulated 10 points from six matches and boasted a tournament-best Net Run Rate (NRR) of 1.806, underlining their dominance with both bat and ball.

While Rwanda appeared well positioned to secure a final berth, the race behind them remained finely balanced. Zimbabwe HPC held second place, but Nigeria and Brazil were level on six points and still within striking distance. Malawi, meanwhile, were searching for their first points of the campaign.
The rest day offered teams an opportunity to regroup, recover and strategise ahead of a decisive final phase of the round-robin stage.
Zimbabwe HPC strengthen final push
The first match after the break saw Zimbabwe HPC face Nigeria in a clash with major implications for the standings.
Batting first, Zimbabwe HPC posted 126 for 7 in 20 overs, thanks largely to a superb innings of 57 from 42 balls by Nyasha Gwanzura, who struck nine fours and two sixes. Her aggressive knock laid the foundation for a competitive total after Zimbabwe lost wickets at regular intervals.
Nigeria’s bowlers fought hard, with Christabel Chukwuonye claiming 4 wickets for 21 runs and Oseyande Omonkhobhio taking 2 for 16, helping restrict Zimbabwe from pushing beyond the 130-run mark.
However, Zimbabwe HPC’s bowling attack responded emphatically.
Nigeria’s chase never gained momentum as wickets fell from the very first delivery. The batting lineup struggled against disciplined bowling and was eventually dismissed for 89 in 15.1 overs, handing Zimbabwe HPC a convincing 37-run victory.
The standout performer was captain Adel Zimunu, who produced a match-winning spell of 4 wickets for 26 runs, earning the Player of the Match award.
The result represented a major boost for Zimbabwe HPC’ssemi-final ambitions while placing additional pressure on Nigeria heading into their remaining fixtures.
Brazil edges Malawi in low-scoring encounter
The second match of the day saw Brazil take on Malawi in another crucial encounter.
Brazil endured a difficult start after losing their first two wickets without a run on the board. Yet a composed unbeaten 41 from 49 balls by Roberta Moretti helped stabilise the innings and guide Brazil to 87 for 7 in 20 overs.
Malawi’s bowlers impressed, particularly Sugeni Kananji, who returned excellent figures of 3 for 10, while Lidia Dimba chipped in with two wickets.
Chasing 88, Malawi looked capable of securing their first win of the tournament, with Sugeni Kananji contributing 31 runs from 31 deliveries. However, Brazil’s bowlers maintained relentless pressure throughout the innings.
The decisive contribution came from Lara Moisés, whose outstanding spell of 3 wickets for just 7 runs in four overs dismantled the middle order and earned her the Player of the Match accolade.
Malawi were eventually restricted to 76 for 8, leaving Brazil victorious by 11 runs.
The victory kept Brazil firmly in contention for a semifinal place and added further intrigue to the qualification race.
Race to the Final heating up
With the tournament approaching its conclusion, the importance of every point has become increasingly evident.
Rwanda remain the team to beat, but Zimbabwe HPC’svictory over Nigeria has strengthened their grip on a top-four finish. Brazil’s triumph over Malawi also keeps them firmly in the hunt, while Nigeria must now regroup quickly to protect their own final lap aspirations.
As the round-robin phase enters its decisive final days, teams are not only chasing victories but also crucial net run rate advantages that could prove decisive in separating sides locked on equal points.
