A ten-man Paraguay side overcame Turkiye 1-0 in a Group D contest of the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup at the Sam Francisco Bay Area stadium, Santa Clara.
Matias Galarza Fonda scored 64 seconds after kick-off as Paraguay took the lead.
Galarza, who features for Major League Soccer club Atlanta United (on loan from Argentinian side River Plate), scored with a strong left-footed effort past goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir of Galatasaray Football Club.
This is arguably the fastest goal of the championship so far, beating Ismael Saibari’s goal (scored against Scotland after 70 seconds).
The South Americans were reduced to 10 men with a sending-off for Miguel Almiron in the third minute of added time before the mandatory half-time break.
Paraguay, which fell 4-1 to the United States of America (USA) on the opening match day in Los Angeles, now has their first three points in the championship.
Meanwhile, the USA overcame Australia 2-0 at the Seattle Stadium.
Cameron Robert Burges (own goal) and Alexander Michael Freeman in the 11th and 43rd minutes, respectively, spurred USA to their second victory at the competition played every four years.
With six points in the bag, USA already secured their berth at the Round of 32 stage, joining the tournament co-hosts, Mexico.
Paraguay and Australia both have three points apiece and remain in contention for the Round of 32 slot.
Turkiye is eliminated from the competition, even with a game to play, joining Haiti.
