Nigerian superstar Victor Osimhen revealed why he declined the captain’s armband offered by German midfielder İlkay Gündoğan on Saturday.
The highly-rated striker scored and provided an assist as the team returned to winning ways with a 3-1 win over Alanyaspor at Rams Park.
In a post-match interview, Osimhen explained that he felt it was strange to accept the armband from the experienced Gündoğan, whom he deeply respects.
“İlkay is someone I respect very much; he is very valuable to me. He is a person known worldwide,” Osimhen told Galatasaray’s official website.
“He is both calm and motivating. He is someone we can always talk to. He is very visionary. When he brought me the captain’s armband, it felt strange.”
Osimhen explained that he immediately handed the armband back to Gündoğan so the experienced midfielder could continue leading the team.
“I gave it back so he could lead us. He helps us every time he comes into the game. He is someone who deserves love,” he added.
Across all competitions this season, Osimhen has netted 17 goals and provided six assists in 25 appearances, delivering consistent impact in both the Süper Lig and UEFA Champions League.
