Libyan giants Al-Ittihad SC have officially announced Rulani Mokwena as the club’s new head coach.
The club announced the appointment of the South African tactician on Tuesday.
This comes after Mokwena and MC Alger parted ways last week, with the coach reportedly agreeing to a two-year deal with an option to extend in Tripoli.
The 39-year-old will be reunited with Thembinkosi Lorch and Stephane Aziz Ki, both of whom he brought with to Wydad Casablanca before his departure at the end of the 2024/25 season.
Mokwena’s arrival in Tripoli was delayed as he was detained at Houari Boumediene Airport on Sunday for carrying over the allowed amount of physical cash. He has since been cleared to travel after appearing in the Dar El Beida Court, where he was handed a two-month suspended prison sentence.
Al-Ittihad is poised to join Al Ahly Tripoli atop the Libyan Premier League standings. The club sits six points behind the league leaders but has two games in hand, which Mokwena will look to make the most of.
