The stage is set, the fairways are alive, and one of Uganda’s biggest professional golf weeks of the year is officially underway.
The 2026 Pearl of Africa Golf Series opened on Wednesday at Entebbe Club with a lively Pro-Am that brought together professionals, amateurs, corporate partners and golf enthusiasts in a fitting curtain-raiser to a tournament carrying significance far beyond the fairways.
The Pro-Am was not merely an opening-day attraction. It offered the first taste of the competition, camaraderie and international flavour expected to define the days ahead as the Pearl of Africa Golf Series continues its push to establish Uganda as a serious destination on the regional and international golfing map.
Played at Entebbe Club’s par-71 course, the opening event brought together 29 teams, with professionals from across Africa joining Ugandan players and corporate representatives in a format that blended competition with networking and entertainment.
At the top of the leaderboard was Afromania 2, whose combination of South African professional Ruan De Smidt and Ugandans Ronald Kwikiriza and Daniel Kalungi produced a winning team score of 113.
De Smidt returned 33, while Kwikiriza posted 39 and Kalungi 41, giving Afromania 2 the day’s leading aggregate. Their performance also earned the team the Pro-Am winning prize of UGX 1 million, alongside a Castle Lite pack for all team members and an Exim Bank duffel bag.
Pinnacle Security 1 finished second on 109, with South African professional Toto Thimba Jr scoring 42, Hassan Ssentamu 29 and Annita Amumpaire 38. The team collected UGX 600,000, a Castle Lite pack and a Vivo Energy hamper.
MTN MoMo 2 completed the top three with 107. South African Slade Pickering carded 38, Peace Hellen returned 39, and Edward Nyatia produced the team’s lowest individual score of 30. Their reward was UGX 400,000, a Castle Lite pack and Exim Bank toilet bags and towels for the team members.
But beneath the leading scores was an even bigger story: the Pearl of Africa Golf Series has begun to look and feel like the international tournament Uganda has been working towards.
With a field of elite players from Uganda and abroad, including a sizeable South African contingent, the series provides a platform for professionals to test themselves against different styles and levels of competition while giving the country an opportunity to showcase its golf and tourism potential.
The Pro-Am brought professionals and amateurs together in the same competition, creating a relaxed but competitive atmosphere before the intensity shifts dramatically with the main championship.
Several teams remained within touching distance of the leaders. Vivo Energy 2 and Home Bliss 2 both finished on 106, while UTB 2 and Castle Lite 1 registered 105. Exim Bank 1 and Aquafina 1 were next on 103, demonstrating how closely contested the opening day was across the top half of the field.
For the international professionals, the Pro-Am also provided an early introduction to Entebbe’s demands before the serious business begins on Thursday.
The field featured players from South Africa, Kenya, Eswatini, Nigeria and England alongside Ugandan professionals and amateurs, underlining the regional and international character of this year’s tournament.
Among the Ugandan professionals taking part is Ronald Rugumayo, who returned a score of 35 for MTN MoMo 3. His team finished 28th with 65, while Greg Snow of Kenya featured for The Meat Guy 1, which finished 29th on 64.
Rugumayo has just won back-to-back titles, the Uganda Pro Open and MTN Pro Tee.
Those results, however, will quickly become part of the opening chapter rather than the main story.
The Pearl of Africa Golf Series is ultimately about the professional championship that follows. The tournament, running from September 16 to 19, is Uganda’s first Official World Ranking golf event and forms part of the Sunshine Development and BET Tour’s SunDev EA Swing. Its significance lies in giving professionals an opportunity to compete for valuable Official World Golf Ranking points while connecting Ugandan golf to wider international circuits.
The main championship will be played over 54 holes, with the professional field facing a cut after two rounds. Only the leading 20 professionals will advance to the final round, where the battle for the title will reach its decisive stage. Ties for the winning positions will be settled through sudden-death playoffs.
That structure gives the coming days a completely different complexion. The championship will demand patience, precision and the ability to survive three rounds of stroke-play golf.
And every good round could move a player closer not only to the Pearl of Africa title, but also to the ranking points that can influence the next stage of a professional career.
The prize purse, set between UGX 70 million and UGX 78 million, adds further weight to the competition, while the involvement of partners including the Uganda Tourism Board reflects the broader ambition behind the event.
For Uganda, this is about more than four days of golf at Entebbe Club. The Pearl of Africa Golf Series is part of an effort to position the country as a premier golf destination in East Africa, using sport to attract international participation, increase visibility and strengthen sports tourism.
The fairways of Entebbe have already spoken once. Now, the Pearl of Africa Golf Series gets serious.
